Eight Courses. One Transformative Year.

Our 8th-grade program pairs Qur’an and Islamic Studies with a full Common Core academic load. Every course is built on a published, research-backed curriculum. Choose a course to see what students actually cover.

Qur’an

Edep Academy develops its Qur’an curriculum with homeschool Qur’an teachers across America, using a specially prepared Qur’an Learning Textbook. The program covers Tajweed, Makharij, Sifat, Hifdh, recitation, and a basic understanding of the Surahs students memorize. Recitation and memorization are heard and corrected by an instructor every day, so students memorize according to Qiraat-i Asim and Riwaya Hafs from the start.

What students cover
  • Apply Makharij with accuracy and distinguish subtle differences between Arabic letters
  • Apply and differentiate the Sifat of the letters
  • Identify Tajweed rules and their causes using their original Arabic terms
  • Learn key Qur’anic terms
  • Memorize the short Salah prayers and Surahs from ad-Duha (93) to an-Nas (114), then Yā Sīn, al-Mulk, an-Naba and al-Fath
  • Learn to call the Adhan and lead the prayer

Certification. Students are awarded Qur’an Certificates by level of achievement, recognizing their mastery of Tajweed, memorization and recitation, qualifying them to teach the Qur’an and to lead prayers.

Islamic Studies

Edep Academy adopted the North East Islamic Community Center’s Islamic Studies curriculum. It lays the foundations of the various Islamic sciences and disciplines by building insight and understanding, opening the way for students to think, discuss and ask questions rather than memorize summaries.

What students cover
  • Introduction to Tafsir:  Tafsir methodology at an intermediate level, with commentaries on the short chapters.
  • Seerah:  The life of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in both chronology and philosophy.
  • Introduction to Hadith: Terminology, references and methodology, plus analysis of 16 noble sayings.
  • Islamic Faith: The 6 articles of faith, explained and then discussed in detail.
  • Fiqh: The 5 pillars, purification, the 5 daily prayers, charity, pilgrimage, holy days and nights.
  • Fundamental Islamic Terms: Definitions in both their dictionary and theological meanings.
  • Arabic: A comprehensive course with digital media, skills practice, progress tests and glossaries in 15 languages.

Materials: Each unit follows NEICC curriculum mapping and its published textbook.

Language Arts

Edep Academy adopted the EngageNY English Language Arts curriculum, developed by NYSED under the Common Core Learning Standards. Materials are organized in four levels: grade, module, unit, and then lesson, so each year follows a deliberate learning progression rather than a sequence of disconnected texts.

What students cover:
  • A sequenced, spiraled, content-rich program aligned to the CCLS.
  • Year-long scope and sequence documents, with module overviews.
  • Performance tasks in the middle and at the end of every module.
  • Lesson plans with class work, homework and scaffolding materials.
  • Built on Universal Design for Learning, so the same materials serve English language learners, students with disabilities, accelerated learners and students working below grade level.

Why it matters. Because Edep uses the same step-by-step grade levels as traditional schools, everything a student learns matches up with what their classmates back home are learning. When they return to their home school district, they can jump right back into their regular classes without missing a beat.

Algebra 1

Edep Academy uses the online Pearson enVision Algebra 1 curriculum. enVision Algebra 1 Common Core ©2024 was built from the ground up for the Traditional Pathway of the Common Core State Standards, with anytime online and offline access to instructional content and interactive examples powered by Desmos.

The units:
  • Solving equations and inequalities
  • Linear functions, linear models, and systems of linear equations and inequalities
  • Introduction to nonlinear functions
  • Exponents and exponential functions
  • Polynomials and factoring
  • Quadratic functions, and solving quadratic equations
  • Radical functions
  • Statistics

Placement: Students will be placed in either Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1, ensuring they start high school math at the level that best supports their success and confidence.

Pre-Algebra, 8th Grade Math

Edep Academy uses Pearson’s online enVisionmath 2.0 curriculum for 8th Grade Math. It emphasizes conceptual understanding alongside procedural skill through problem solving, interactive experiences and visual learning, with personalized practice and built-in interventions.

The eight topics
  • Real numbers
  • Analyze and solve linear equations
  • Use functions to model relationships
  • Investigate bivariate data
  • Analyze and solve systems of linear equations
  • Congruence and similarity
  • Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem
  • Solve problems involving surface area and volume

Continuity. enVisionmath 2.0 is the same series many districts use, so students return home on sequence.

Science

Edep Academy Science rests on the Progressive Science Initiative through NJCTL — a research-based curriculum developed over ten years by teachers to support high achievement in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.

How the course runs
  • Classrooms built on lively debate and collaborative problem-solving
  • Course content delivered on Interactive Whiteboards
  • Free digital content replaces textbooks, given to students as printouts or electronically
  • A fully integrated approach covering not only materials but teaching methods, environment, scheduling and practice
  • Curriculum updated frequently from teacher feedback worldwide, so material stays current

Partner. Delivered through the Center for Teaching and Learning, which aligns its content to new standards in science and mathematics.

Social Studies, United States History

McGraw-Hill Networks: A Social Studies Learning System is a multiple award-winning program and the first truly integrated print and digital curriculum for Middle School U.S. History. It brings the people, issues and events of the past to life while staying grounded in solid pedagogy.

What students cover
  • The Story Matters chapter openers, which put students in the middle of the action
  • Biography features on the figures who shaped each era
  • Step Into Place maps and Step Into Time timelines
  • Differentiated instruction and leveled reading
  • Customizable assessments, worksheets and flexible online learning tools

Format. Print and digital run together, so class discussion and independent work draw on the same material.

Character Education

Character Education Seminars run parallel to our mission: to nurture students intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, morally and socially. They are held in our facility by guest speakers drawn from the community, and are the part of the week students most often name years later.

How the seminars run
  • Held twice a week, thirty minutes to an hour each
  • Led by writers, community leaders, doctors and engineers
  • Also by religious leaders, counselors, teachers and professors
  • And by non-profit directors and other guests from the community
  • Open discussion — students question the speaker directly
